Finding the Just-Right Books

Storyline Online is THE place to go to hear celebrities read children’s books aloud!

Unite for Literacy has a great collection of free online books for younger kids.

In Florida, the New Worlds Reading Initiative offers free books and resources directly to students from VPK through 5th grade. If your child lives in Florida, you can apply here.

Little Free Libraris are free neighborhood book exchanges where anyone can take a book to read. They can be found around the world. Use the Little Free Library World Map to find one near you.

Diverse Bookfinder is a searchable database of children’s and young adult books featuring Black and Indigenous Peoples and People of Color (BIPOC).

The Spanish Experiment offers well-known children’s stories translated into Spanish and spoken by a native Spanish speaker.

Blendable Sounds

As children are learning the sounds associated with letters, it’s important that the pronunciation of the sounds are able to be blended together to form words.

Adults, don’t miss UFLI director Dr. Holly Lane demonstrating how to pronounce the sounds associated with each letter of the alphabet in the UFLI Blendable Sounds tutorial.

And for the kids, musician Jack Hartmann is known for the catchy educational songs he writes and performs. With the expert guidance of UFLI, Jack created his Blendable Letter Sounds song and companion game to help children learn their letter sounds.

UFLI Foundations

The UFLI Games Generator makes practicing reading words easy and fun. Watch the tutorial video to learn how to use the app, and then watch your kids get excited about word reading practice.

Is your child learning with UFLI Foundations at home or in school? The UFLI Foundations Toolbox contains weekly home practice activities aligned with all lessons in the scope and sequence. Access the home practice sheets for kindergarten, first grade, and second grade to reinforce what your child is learning in school. Use these PBS Learning Media Virtual Field Trips for Elementary to introduce your child to many new concepts.  Knowledge about the world is an important contributor to reading comprehension!

The Junior Ranger Program of the National Park Service has downloadable books and activities to engage children and help them learn about the natural world around them.

Put Reading First is a parent guide that summarizes the National Reading Panel’s findings about how to help children learn to read. It lists important things parents should see teachers doing at school, and provides suggestions for how to help a child at home.
