Definitions of Dyslexia

Some of the confusion around dyslexia stems from the lack of a single, universally accepted definition or description. In this handout, you’ll find the three most widely used definitions, so you can compare them side-by-side and consider their purposes and applications.

This technical assistance brief from the Florida Center for Reading Research describes dyslexia, particularly methods of early identification, prevention, and remedial instruction. The brief includes clear, detailed information about the importance and effects of early intervention and remedial instruction.

Dyslexia Screeners
Dr. Nadine Gaab’s group compiled a list of all available screeners for dyslexia and early literacy into document. You can find different tabs for pre-readers and early reading, which screeners are validated or peer-reviewed, and resources on how to screen.  Another chart from the National Center on Intensive Intervention provides ratings on the technical rigor of the tools, including classification accuracy, technical standards, and usability features.

In this article preprint, Drs. Jeremy Miciak and Jack Fletcher, both from the University of Houston, discuss best practices for identification of dyslexia within the a multi-tier systems of support (MTSS) framework.
